Chapter 3 Question

Here is the question for Chapter 3:
Quote the part in this chapter that you believe to be the pithy quote of the chapter. This can be anything from a paragraph to a few words.

  1. The very first sentence of Chapter Three of the Hunger Games seems to clearly point out the very core of this chapter and Katniss's entire Hunger Games experience. The chapter contains the visits of Katniss's loved ones before she is whisked away to play in the Hunger Games. The mood is miserable because the odds are that Katniss will not live.

The quote is, "The moment the anthem ends, we are taken into custody." Every night after this moment Katniss will yet again hear the anthem and see the emblem of the Capitol, only to be reminded of the part she is playing in the Capitol's horrid Games. She is being "taken into custody" by the Capitol to assist them in showing the districts of Panem their immense power. Katniss is to be a playing piece in their Games and her capture is the first step towards this ultimate goal.

  2. I agree, and this is kind of similar to Genesis, in the beginning when the snake deceived Eve. From that point on it was like Adam and Eve were in the snakes custody, until they made the choice to go back to God. Agree/Disagree?

  3. You're right! In addition to the connection with the snake, Joseph's containment in Egypt is also similar to Katniss's situation. He was kept in the kingdom to keep the Pharoah's people safe, but he eventually had tons of power and influence because of his success. Maybe Katniss will have this sort of influence over the people of Panem because she won the seventy-fourth Hunger Games. Perhaps she can use her new image to help people escape the suffering the Capitol has brought upon their lives.

  4. I personally think that it is really cool how all of the people that are thought to be the less successful always come out as triumphant and somewhat powerful in the end.

  5. The first paragraph is a really good pithy quote, and it is linked to all the participants being pawns of the capital. The anthem could be a symbol for the book, linked to themes of chosing to believe in what you want - unlike in Panem. I do not think Katniss was very powerful in the end, she only got her bit of glory during the game. For the capitol there is always another game that needs to please the crowd.
