Compare Rue and Katniss's newly established alliance with the bond that Gene and Phineas shared in A Separate Peace and the alliances that the two boys made with other people in ASP.

  1. Rue and Katniss's bond is like Phineas and Gene's in the sense that they are both/all fighting for their lives. In Phineas, Katniss and Rue's case it is physically. However, we hear the two stories from Gene and Katniss’s points of view, and it seems that they are both trying to find their identities. Rue and Katniss have to go against each other at some point, and Gene is always at odds with Finny although he doesn’t show it to the other characters in the book.

  2. I find that Rue and Katniss's bond was different from Phineas and Gene's bond because they were forced together on the basis of survival while Gene and Phineas were brought together on the basis of friendship. Despite this difference, Katniss and Gene are a bit alike in the way that they both had to hold back from their relationships a little. Gene had to hold back because of his guilt and attempt to protect Finny and Katniss couldn't get to close with Rue because only one of them could live.
