Chapter 21 Question

Defend your decision on whether or not Katniss is actually falling for Peeta instead of just acting like they are in love.

    I think Katniss still thinks of Peeta as an ally or friend, just someone who can help them both survive the game. When they are talking Peeta seems to “pretend” better, Katniss is always thinking about what the audience would like, or saying things that would help them. If she really liked him she might not have to think about what to do or say as much.

    I think Peeta and Katniss are in love, but Katniss will not admit it or let herself go to it. Katniss is overwhelmed and feels that she must focus on her family and the games, not some silly boy. Katniss wants to show her strength and independence, but everyone needs a shoulder to cry on. She is somewhat torn between her bond with Gale and her love of Peeta; she can't seem to choose who to give her love to and who to let go and hurt. "Peeta is there." as Haymitch said. Peeta is already truly in love with Katniss and willing to give his life for her. Katniss, however, needs Haymitch's coaching to even construct a convincing act. In a way Katniss's indecision is hurting more people then her final decision might have.
