Chapter 8 Question

Criticize Katniss's rash behavior in her private session with the gamemakers. In chapter 8 she seems to realizes it's true impact. How, exactly, might Katniss have hurt her family and all she fought to protect in the Seam by acting out so impulsively?

  1. Katniss’s action against the game makers contradicted everything she had done for her family in district 12. She was definitely not thinking about the consequences. Although, Katniss has gotten a lot more stress and anger to deal with since coming to the capitol. She lost control with her anger at the game makers for not even caring about her life. If the game makers did decide to punish her family, and Katniss, they might just have her die a painful, humiliating death. That could be punishment enough, not even giving her a chance. If they took her family before the game Katniss might actively try to rebel, or be motivated not to win the game.

  2. Katniss's life has been based on emotion and instinct, because she doesn't have the luxury of relaxing for a moment. She is always on the high alert for danger leaving her common sense lagging behind. This rash decision making and behavior has usually helped Katniss and her family, but when you are trying to win someone's respect and attention, it may not work as well. This could hurt her family because the Capitol wants full cooperation, not those who will think for themselves and consider everything and think through everything carefully and with care. This is also going to hurt the Seam because when a tribute angers the Capitol, the entire district will suffer. Katniss needs to reign in her emotions and be more rational instead of rashly or else her family and district will suffer.

  3. I believe that in Swing Kids there was a quote where Peter's mother says, "You must learn to steel yourself, Peter. You cannot let your feelings overcome you." Perhaps Katniss needs to consider taking similar advice.
