Chapter 19 Question

Appraise why you would support all the contestants from the same district joining together. Why would the gamemakers do this besides to make the audience happy?

  1. I would support this type of action because it would require less deaths. Tributes from the same districts who knew each other and might have been fond of one another would not have to kill each other. A victor would not have to go home and live with the guilt of seeing the grief of the family of the other tribute.

The Gamemaker's main intention in giving tributes this advantage, was to please the audience with the fact that Peeta and Katniss could be together, but they also looked at it as a chance to show the districts that the Capitol is all powerful. I recently read a book called 1984, in the book the society was under control of the Party. Everything the Party said must be believed not matter what. If the Party said 2+2=5 then you had better believe it. You had to be both clever and ignorant to live. The Party would torture you if you committed a thought crime (for example you appeared to be conspiring against the Party), then they would kill you once you fully understood their ideals. The Capitol is like this in a way because they wanted to show that the districts have no power and that only the Capitol controlled thought.

  2. I would totally support this decision. It not only gives a twist in the games, but it also gives the tributes another reason to live. They are already on high survival mode but if they have someone else to look out for, then they have to come back down to earth a bit. This may have helped drive them to finish the Games with heads held high.

The Gamemakers may have done this to show the tributes that they can only rely on themselves and no one else. They may have done this to reinforce the fact that they are still the subordinates to the Capitol and that they must do what they say. This also may have been a moment of weakness for them due to the fact that Katniss had made such a big impression on them. Peeta (at first) was more of a handicap than a help to Katniss and I think that the Gamemakers knew that. Peeta may have represented the ball and chain of the Capitol that the Districts have to deal with each day.
