Chapter 17 Question

Draw upon your previous experiences with sudden terror. Try to remember the feelings that strike you when you think something bad might have happened to someone you care about. Relate this to Katniss's emotional state when she hears Rue's scream.

  1. Whenever I have a feeling that something will happen to someone I care about, I tense up, and breathe in. I do not usually show any sudden movement, but wait to see what happens then act impulsively from there. Katniss knows something night have happened to Rue because she cannot find her, so she is already nervous and stressed out, before she hears Rue scream. Katniss does take the time to think about what she might be getting into, but goes anyways. I personally thought Rue had turned against Katniss and was luring her to be caught by the careers, and then she could slip away.

  2. When I have experienced terror before, the first thought I have had afterwards is that I never want to feel that way again. You feel trapped, helpless, and like it will never go away, but it eventually does, but the memory still stays. I can not imagine the sinking feeling that Katniss must have experienced when she heard one that she cared for in so much pain. She must have felt terrible and her emotions would have been scattered and imbalanced. This must have been a horrible to have experienced.
