Chapter 4 Question

Compare and contrast how Katniss and Gene both came to the same conclusion about their "enemy".

  1. Katniss and Gene are very much alike even though they are in two very different settings. Both of them in a way were fighting with themselves. That is one of their enemies, themselves. Then there was another person that they were fighting. In Gene's case it was the school and the war. In Katniss's case it was the Capitol. Both of their enemies seemed bigger than them, but they both had the courage (eventually) to face their enemies and conquer them. The only difference was the enemy they were facing. Katniss was facing the Capitol and Gene was facing himself. The conclusion that they came too was that they needed to face and fight their enemies, otherwise they would never have peace that they were trying to find.

  2. Katniss built a Maginot Line much in the same way Gene did. They built walls in their minds to protect themselves from things they didn't want to face. These two characters had a common enemy, self-forced upon ignorance. Katniss built her wall to keep herself from screaming out against the Capitol; she had to hold her tongue and remain calm to keep her family and herself from harm. If she just looked away from the fact that the Capitol was doing horrible things she could prevent harm from coming her way. However, Katniss had lots of trouble with this. She always seemed to be making comments inside her head about what the Capitol shouldn't be doing, but she made no actions out of it. Even when the rebellion became well known in District 12 she remained ignorant. Both Gene and Katniss had traumatic experiences and went a long time before they came to face their walls with the intent to tear them down. Gene took fifteen years and Katniss was still working on understanding her ignorances at the end of the book.

  3. I like what Megan said about how Katniss and Gene built Maginot lines from ignorance. Although even if Katniss had known Peeta was not against her, she was still being forced to fight against him and they could not be friends for long in the game. So maybe knowing the truth for Katniss would have been worse for her mental being in the game. Of course for Gene the truth would have been a lot better for him to know, but he made Finny even after he learned the truth. So he is really just jealous and already mentally hurt.
